EPL End of the Year Report Card 2017/2018: Manchester City

Top Scorer:

  • Sergio Aguero: 21 goals

Top Assists:

  • Kevin De Bruyne: 16 assists

Key Player:

Kevin De Bruyne is arguably the best attacking midfielder in the world.  This season he has netted 12 goals and provided 21 assists in all competitions.  If Mo Salah didn’t have his record breaking season at Liverpool, he would be the English Premier League’s player of the season by a landslide.  De Bruyne is an absolute joy to watch on the pitch and at only 26 years of age, he still has many great years of football to come.

2017/2018 Season Performance:

What an absolutely incredible year it’s been for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City.  Every media outlet had a lock on Manchester City winning the Premier League before Boxing Day.  How could they not honestly? With acquisitions of Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Ederson, and Danilo, the team has vastly improved this season over last.

City smashed numerous records this season:

  • Consecutive Premier League Wins: 18
  • Most Passes in a Premier League Game: 902
  • Most Goals Scored: 106
  • Most Wins: 32
  • Most Points: 100
  • Most Away Wins: 16
  • Most Away Points: 50
  • Goal Difference: +79
  • Points Ahead of Second: 19

All of these records could not have been broken without the captain of the ship, Pep Guardiola.  Pep joined Manchester City in July 2016 and has been nothing short of amazing.  Last season the team struggled to play his style, but with the addition of Ederson and the Fullbacks, his tactics really came out this year.  Many in the media have accused Manchester City of buying this season and the records that have come along with it, but you cannot argue the results, and that fact that there are plenty of other clubs spending large amounts of cash only makes the championship sweeter.  Manchester City was also able to win this year’s Carabao Cup.

Grade: A

The only thing preventing Manchester City from receiving an A+ is that they were beaten by Liverpool in the Champions League Quarter Finals and losing to Wigan Athletic in the 5th round of the FA Cup. Overall an incredible season though.

All 20 teams will be graded by the Armchair Gaffers. Stay tuned as more are released over time.
